Staycation with Food Allergies

We have just got back from a wonderful four night break on the East Yorkshire Coast, a lovely little part of the country called Flamborough Head.

Packing for a holiday is usually quite stressful at the best of times making sure we've got everything, but packing for a staycation with a child who has multiple allergies can sometimes seem never ending.

We stayed in a Static holiday home at Haven Thornwick Bay, we chose a self catering location so we could safely prepare and eat food together without the added stress of Covid -19 or cross contamination with allergies. Don't get me wrong the idea of going away and not having to cook or worry about food is my idea of a real holiday, but that is a very distant memory and as a family we have embraced our new way of holidaying.

First of all I write a list of all the foods my daughter wants to eat, also easy foods to pack such as cucumber, carrot and apple sticks that she can snack on throughout the day.

Then comes the list of cleaning things, so disinfectant wipes, bottle of disinfectant, disinfectant spray, washing up liquids, cloths, sponges and kitchen rolls. Everything but the kitchen sink!

Jasmine is very anxious when it comes to using cups, plates, cutlery etc that isn't ours and this can be a big issue for her if she doesn't feel safe, so I decided to pack half of my kitchenware and bring that too, so Jasmine had her own cutlery, plate, dish, cups, snack tray and cook ware just to give her peace of mind that she was safe and we didn't have any anxiety issue surrounding her eating.

Once we arrived at the holiday home, I went into the already very clean caravan and blitzed it again, wiping down cupboards, handles, light switches, tables you name it, I cleaned it, by doing this it gives us all peace of mind not only from catching the dreaded coronavirus but also for ensuring Jasmine is as safe as we can possible make her be whilst she has severe multiple allergies.

For the whole time we were there we didn't have to use antihistamines once, we are always over joyed when this happens, the pollen count is always much lower at the seaside and we all feel the benefits, the sea air always seems to help her to breathe much better too, so the use of her inhaler was minimal.

By being prepared and organised beforehand and planning meals and snacks we had a very good holiday and didn't have to worry about where or what we were going to eat.
