How To Do Your Laundry With Eczema

Most expectant mothers are told to use Non Bio Detergent to protect their babies skin from harsh chemicals, so naturally I followed this advice and prewashed everything before Jasmine was born, but my little baby had some of the worst eczema I had ever seen, we switched our detergents a few times before coming full circle and using what we started with. ( Jasmine's eczema was triggered by CMPA in the early days).

It is also easy to miss the link between detergents and eczema and changing detergents can be all it takes to trigger a flare up. For the past seven years I have used Fairy Non Bio liquid detergent omitting the fabric softener unless on towels and this has been kind to Jasmines skin and my own! Here is what we do

  • Turn all clothes inside out

  • Don't fill the machine, half the load if possible

  • Use a Non Bio detergent

  • Use less detergent

  • Use liquid instead of powder as it leaves less residue

  • Always use the extra rinse programme

  • Don't use dryer sheets

  • Dry clothes indoors either on an airer or in the dryer

  • Use the same detergent for the whole family

  • Wash all household items in the same liquid detergent
